Creditors—have first claim to estates. Pay creditors with estate funds before you distribute. Don’t distribute if there are insufficient estate funds to satisfy creditors, or you can be personally liable to pay creditors. Advertise for creditors for your protection. The largest creditor in most estates is the Canada Revenue Agency CRA for income tax. Tax clearance certificates should be obtained to close estates.
