Costs—legal fees in lawsuits are allocated by Ontario rules. Few exemptions apply. But, generally, losers pay winners’ court costs. If you lose in court, you can be required to personally pay most of the winner’s legal fees. Courts can order you to pay costs even if you win. Courts require parties to act reasonably to reduce costs. Consider dispute resolution and offers to settle disputes to avoid costs risks.
