How to Find a Trustworthy Estate Executor: Secure Your Life’s Work
The wrong executor can, accidentally start family feuds, waste your money and rob your family and friends of their rightful inheritance and future security.
Sloppy, incompetent, negligent or dishonest executors can plunder your estate. It can happen to you. I’ll describe three common mistakes that can cost your family a lot of money:
Mistake #1: Not realizing the damage the wrong executor can do.
Executors can cost your family a fortune in wasted time, money and years of pain.
You don’t need to go to law school, but you must know a little about what executors do. Otherwise, you may end up naming someone who can’t handle the job.
Mistake #2: Choosing the first person who comes to mind without checking all your options.
Don’t select someone just because they’re your firstborn or a university graduate. This is especially true if you have special needs (such as a business, or spendthrift or hostile relatives).
Your executor’s skills must match your needs. If they don’t, your beneficiaries could end up fighting in court with a bungling executor and waste more of your money.
Mistake #3: Failing to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of possible executors to make the best choice.
Are you stuck choosing between your niece, Jennifer, a tax auditor who only talks taxes, and Tim, a nephew you only see when he needs to borrow money? Okay, that’s an extreme example. But when do you choose:
• children over a spouse?
• your spouse and child together?
• professionals instead of relatives?
Jennifer may not be able to deal with people but is good with details. And she is financially responsible. But is that enough?
Emotions can trump reason. Even in the best families, arguments can start over how your glassware collection is divided. You don’t want to set off a powder keg by selecting people who can’t get along.
What If You Choose the Wrong Executor?
Second marriages and blended families make choosing executors crucial to your family dreams coming true. Being an executor is not easy so choosing wisely makes a big difference.
A bad executor leaves behind years of tears, bitterness, anger, frustration and lawsuits. Your dream of leaving a proper financial legacy for your loved ones or your favourite charities can be shattered.
